Two decades ago there was virtually no Florida blueberry market — it was simply too hot to grow common commercial varieties.

The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences stepped in and developed new varieties that thrive in early spring in Florida, giving the Sunshine State a unique market window and the first domestic fruit of the season.

Not only that, royalties from those new blueberry varieties now rival Gatorade as UF’s top income generator.

We took a trip to Dundee, FL to find out more about the booming Florida blueberry industry in a report that first aired on the RFD-TV Network.
