HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC — The Southeast Produce Council announced the appointment of two industry veterans to serve on its Board of Governors advisory panel at the Southern Innovations Organics and Foodservice Expo held here Sept. 28-30. Each recently appointed member brings a unique background and fresh perspective to provide guidance to the SEPC’s Board of Directors.
Garry Bergstrom joined Publix in 1972 as a part-time produce clerk. Garry was then promoted to produce manager in 1975, promoted to produce merchandiser in 1987, promoted to produce buyer in 1989, and became Divisional Manager of Produce/Floral for the Lakeland Division in 1999. Garry quickly rose to Corporate Produce Purchasing Manager in 2000 and served as Business Director of Produce/Floral from 2005 until his retirement earlier this year. He married his wife Virginia (Ginny) in 1974, and together they have three children, Eric, Nick, and Kristy, and eight grandchildren.
Gordon M. Hochberg was born in 1951 in New York City and raised in Westchester County, NY. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in history from Lafayette College in 1973. In the late 1970’s, he started freelancing for The Produce News, which was founded in 1897. He quickly moved up the corporate ladder, first as assistant editor, then associate editor, and gained the top editorial position in the summer of 1985. He joined the management side of the company as vice president and co-owner in 1994. He stepped away from day-to-day responsibilities at the publication in the summer of 2011 but continues to report on a variety of issues.
The SEPC Board of Governors serves as an advisory council to the current Chairman of the Board and the Board of Directors as they make decisions that will directly affect the membership. They also provide insight and guidance to maintain the integrity and equality of the council as important decisions are made.
Bergstrom and Hochberg join Bobby Creel of L&M Companies, Al Finch of Florida Classic Growers, Andrew Scott of Nickey Gregory Company, John Shuman of Shuman Produce, and Mark Daniels of General Produce as the SEPC’s current Board of Governors.
